Screw configurations for melt delivery

PARALLEL TWIN-SCREW EXTRUDER SEGMENTS

Melt delivery generally uses forward threaded elements. However, sometimes kneading blocks or reverse thread elements are used in the melt conveying area of the screw, and the material needs to build up pressure upstream of these elements; in order to make the material pass through the die, pressure must also be established in the melt conveying section at the end of the screw.

The filling length of the screw by the melt depends on the viscosity of the material, the lead of the screw, the number of revolutions of the screw, the amount of feed and the resistance of the die. There are thread lead and number of threads that affect the ability to build pressure. Pressure buildup is accompanied by temperature rise, which is due to the low heat transfer coefficient of the polymer and the low ratio of screw cooling surface to melt extrusion.

In order to minimize the temperature brought by the pressure build-up, the configuration of the pressure build-up screw must be optimized to reduce the length of the back pressure zone and minimize the energy of the input material. The shortening of the back pressure zone means that under a predetermined pressure, the pressure gradient must reach the maximum value in the melt delivery section with a certain value of the flow rate.
